You Can’t Always Wear What You Want

Over the past few years, I really feel like I’ve gotten a much better understanding of my body. I know what works, what doesn’t, and I also have become a lot more comfortable in my own skin. No one said this is an easy task but I can provide a few tips on what I’ve learned thus far.

• Figure out what style of clothing really works for your body shape and stick with it. When I feel comfortable and look good in a particular piece of clothing, I remember it and I go back to that style over and over again. This doesn’t mean you have to wear the exact same dress all the time but for example, I know that wrap dresses are very flattering to my shape. I have a bigger chest and a smaller waist, so a dress like this accentuates my hourglass figure, now when I see a wrap dress I’m instantly drawn to it – no questions asked.

• Stop thinking you are only one size and one size only. For the longest time I was hung up on a certain number and a letter. I would never dare to touch a Medium or Large, I knew I was a Small and that was that in my head. Now, what I’ve come to realize is that every brand fits different and I like certain styles to fit completely different on my body. Yes I may be a “small” in most things but I can’t tell you how many mediums and larges I have in my closet now. I started understanding I liked the looser fit of things and I liked the effortless style of a loose cut shirt so I started going up a size. This then changed my whole wardrobe and I started to achieve the look I was always after.

•You have to let go of certain styles of clothing that just will never work for you. I know, it’s tough to digest — I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve looked at a backless dress and wished for a smaller chest so I could wear it without a bra. However, I finally had to give it up and move on. I kept ordering backless pieces with the hope of them some how magically working out, only to be disappointed when they arrived. I had to just understand certain styles will not work for me, so now when I see a pretty dress where you clearly can’t wear a bra with it, I simply don’t even look at it, I don’t even click on it. I just know it doesn’t work for me, it was made for another body type and my shopping process has become much easier.

•Embrace what you’ve got because some things just won’t change! I use to struggle with this all the time because I would look at another girl and want even longer legs and smaller boobs. Once I started working out regularly and feeling strong and good about myself, I realized all my hangups didn’t matter. The time I wasted caring about smaller boobs was so stupid because it was something I couldn’t change. And so over the years I learned to appreciate the fact that I had a chest and had to continually tell myself, “Embrace those ‘girls’ for goodness sake!”. Now, I love certain parts of my body that I use to nit pick at and I’ve stopped caring about the things I can’t change. I truly believe loving and embracing what you have is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. xo
